While tourist attention is for the most part focused on Rio de Janeiro, the state of Rio de Janeiro blooms with attractions.
Resorts, bays, islands and intimate sandy beaches punctuate the coast south of Rio. This area, called the Green Coast nestles Angra dos Reis - 150 km, the largest town - a lively fishing resort with interesting side streets away from the harbor.
In Angra bay are more than 350 islands and the largest, Ilha Grande, is among Brazil’s most beautiful with a nature reserve and stunning beaches.

Grande Beach
It is the most popular beach in the area. There is dense vegetation on the hillside in the back. The beach is 500 m long, with clear green lukewarm water, fine white sand.

Anil Beach
It is an urban beach, with modest homes in the hillsides and Aquidabã Yacht Club on the left end. The Island of the Coconut trees (Ilha dos Coqueiros), right in front and there are areas for volleyball and beach soccer, which is very popular among locals. It is 500 m long, with clear green lukewarm water, coarse dark sand.

Biscaia Beach
It’s 500 m long, with clear green lukewarm water, and fine white sand.

Bonfim Beach
With Hillsides of dense vegetation on both ends of the beach, and basically summerhouses along its sand. The Bonfim Isle, where Ermida N.S. of Bonfim is located. It is a popular beach with 300 m of extension, clear green lukewarm water, fine white sand. OBS.: In May, the Bonfim Festivity, with its foods, drinks, traditional games and auctions, happens at the beach.

Botinas Islands
The many islands that make up Angra dos Reis Bay have become sophisticated and host famous members of Rio and Sao Paulo’s high society on weekends. It is common to see boats at the decks of shopping centers, restaurants and supermarkets. In Angra you shop by boat. Visiting its islands, a short stop at Saco do Ceu, a dive at Botinas will make your stay in Angra memorable. The city has excellent hotels and inns with various leisure options and unforgettable cruises. One of the highlights of Angra’s event calendar is January 1st where a sea procession takes place and the boats are decorated to welcome the New Year.

Camorim Beach
Separated in two segments by small rocks that enter the sea, it is a shallow beach, which allows easy access between them. The beach is surrounded on its right side by summerhouses, dense vegetation and bamboo trees; on the left side, the mouth of Camorim River, surrounded by generous vegetation. There is an anchorage in its central part and watercrafts on the sand. The beach is 200-m long, with clear green lukewarm water and white sand.

Cataguas Island
Located in the western part of the entrance of Jacuacanga Bay, south of Mombaça bay, next to Ponta do Peregrino. They are two small outbursts of Serra do Mar, united by a narrow band of sand. With dense vegetation, sometimes invading the beach, forming great shadowed areas. Peregrino Island is closer to the continent, with its private beach facing Cataguás Island, which belongs to the city of Angra dos Reis and is a leisure area, visited on the weekends and holidays, and propitious for nautical sports.

Éguas Beach
There is quite dense vegetation in the hillsides and rocks next to the breakwater line. The beach is surrounded by a stonewall covered with plants, and at both ends small rocks. It is 80 m long, with clear green lukewarm water, fine and dark sands.

Figueira Beach
With dense vegetation all around, and fragments of rocks in both ends. There are coconut trees, banana trees and avocado trees close to the sand. In the hillside, very close to the beach, are the summerhouses. There are watercrafts anchored in one end of the beach. It is 150 m long, with clear green lukewarm water, fine white sand. Access by sea.

Flechas Beach
Access by sea. It’s a beach with dense vegetation on the hillsides around, and visibly separated in two by a house so close to the water that its sidewalk is high to protect it from the tide movements. It is very popular among tourists, who stop their motorboats for a swim or a meal. Favorable to nautical sports, it has two moorings and all types of watercrafts anchored in its waters. The beach is1,000 m long, with clear green lukewarm water, fine white sand.

Frade´s Peak
There is no access to the peak, for it is in the middle of a dense tropical forest. It’s 1,620 meters high and presents, from certain points of view, the shape of a friar’s hood. The name also originated from a legend according to which a friar used to walk around that area, catechizing the indians, and was killed by the guaianás tribe somewhere near the peak. It is pretty visible from the sea and from highway BR-101 (northbound) at km 130. It is located within the limits of Serra da Bocaina National Park.

Gipoia Island
Gipóia Island access by sea from Santa Luzia Wharf – Downtown. Dense vegetation, deforested in some areas, the south side presents a wilder aspect and with few beaches. The largest concentrations of houses, both of fishermen and vacationists, are on Armação, Fazenda, Jurubaíba, and Flechas beaches, this last one the most popular among tourists.

Ilha Grande
Located between the west end of Restinga de Marambaia and Ponta da Juatinga, it has a total area of approximately 174 km². Its highest point is the Peak of Pedra d’Água, 1,037 m high, however, the most characteristic one is the Peak of the Parrot (Pico do Papagaio), 882 m high, for its similarity with a parrot beak. The position of the island, at the entrance of Ilha Grande Bay, determines a true wind barrier. The island is occupied, partly, by Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande and it is considered a biological reserve. It is totally covered with tropical forest of dense and exuberant flora and fauna, preserved due to the climatic conditions and to the difficult access to the interior of the island. The island presents a great number of beaches, both long and short. The inhabitants are spread in small settlements throughout the beaches. The most important one is Vila do Abraão, where the tourists can find a better infrastructure, with some hotels and bars.

Mambucaba Beach
Located in the Historical Center of Mambucaba, it has the Church of Rosary (Igreja do Rosário) next to it. In the background, the hillside with dense. The wide strip of sand ends, on one side at Mambucaba river's mouth, and on the other at the mouth of Engenho Stream. In front of the church there is an old cross facing the sea, and next to it, a drinkable water fountain used by campers and other visitors. There are also some bars close to the beach. It has clear green lukewarm water, white fine sand.

Monument to the Shipwreckeds
The monument is located at Ponta do Leste (East Tip), on a plateau facing the sea, surrounded by a lawn with concrete benches and some scattered trees. It was built in honor to the victims of the largest naval accident of the Brazilian Navy. On January 21, 1906, the ship - Aquidabã - exploded killing the crème de la crème of the admiralty of the time. The ship was transporting a commission that would supervise the installation, in Jacuacanga Bay, of the Arsenal of the Navy, which would be transferred to that place. It’s a granite obelisk based on a stone with drawers, where the crew's mortal remains are.

Municipal Market
Recently restored and enlarged with new stands. The new façade is part of the revitalizing project of the Historical Center.
 

N. Sr. Do Bonfim Chapel
The construction is isolated on Bonfim's Isle, facing the east. The isle is very close to Bonfim Beach and, in the low tide periods, it is possible to get there on foot. Erected in 1780, in gratitude to Senhor do Bonfim, by Manoel Francisco Gomes, who survived a shipwreck, it was registered by IBPC, on Dec 1st, 1954, and restored in 1976. In front of the chapel there is a wide patio surrounded by walls. The façade is sided by pinnacles, with two belfries on the right. The frontal balcony and the sacristy have been changed. Inside, the life-size image of Our Lord, with encrustations in silver, is a highlight.

Naval College
At the beginning of this century, General Honório de Souza Lima, a distinguished son of Angra dos Reis, using his reputation with President Hermes da Fonseca, convinced him to accept the donation of a widespread lot that the City council had made to the Navy, destined to the construction of a military school. Thus, in 1911, the building, with Captain Rosalvo Mariano Da Silva as the mentor of its architectural project, started to be erected. The chosen location was Tapera's Bay, shortly after denominated Batista das Neves Bay, in Angra dos Reis. In 1914, finished the construction, so imposing the building became that then Minister of the Navy, Admiral Alexandrino de Alencar, decided to establish the Naval School there, where it stayed up to 1920. From then on, with the Naval School back to Rio de Janeiro, the school for apprentice of seaman Admiral Batista das Neves, worked there up to 1949. Finally, on February 25th, 1949, was created the current Naval High School, a teaching institution with the purpose of preparing young people to become cadets at the Naval School of Brazil.

Nossa Sra. do Carmo Covent
The set is facing the sea, with the historical General Osório Square, and the Church of the Third Order of Carmo, to the right. The monumental public fountain Marquês de Herval is nearby. The street that surrounds it is quite busy, for it is the main access to downtown. Right across from the set is CONERJ’s mooring, serving also as place for fish trade. Behind the buildings, the Hill of Carmo stands out. Initially, a modest House of Mission, the construction began on July 16, 1593. Of simple architecture, in Brazilian colonial style, it resisted the bombs during the French invasion in 1710 and has been restored several times. It is an austere construction, without important architectural details - the convent, the church and the belfry. Inside the church, the image of Our Lady of Health and the Crucified Christ, are special highlights.

Vermelha Beach
Located in a beautiful place, between Ponta de Mambucaba and Ponta do Meio, an area of dense vegetation. It has an irregular strip of reddish sand (where the name comes from) . There are luxurious summerhouses along the beach and on the hillside. The access to the beach is made through stairways of stone. The beach is 300 m long, with clear green lukewarm water, white sand.
